What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. It was developed by Francine Shapiro and focuses on helping clients process distressing events- clients can see results in as few as 6 weeks, and on average spend 6-12 weeks in therapy.
EMDR has a high rate of success for PTSD, anxiety, depression, OCD and trauma.
Clients can expect to have an initial session where a standard client history is taken.  Clients will then have 2 sessions minimally where they are taught skills to help work through distressing thoughts that may occur during an EMDR session, or afterwards.  Clients then have a session which is the crux of EMDR using bilateral stimulation, where distressing feelings and thoughts are processed and reshaped so they are less distressing.
Clients will then have a follow up session a week later as a check in, and if there are other distressing events or memories, additional sessions are offered.
